Exploring the intersection between AI and Mental Health
Welcome to my weekly newsletter built to demystify the role of AI in mental health care, offering insights, research, and practical applications that can enhance both therapeutic practices and client outcomes. I also plan to shed light on the major concerns and challenges that AI brings to mental health.
What to expect each week:

This article highlights a very small population, but it addresses some very important questions about the risk of AI chatbots, and the lack of awareness parents have about what their child is doing online.

A Call for Transparency in Mental Health AI Software
This will be an ongoing series over the next few weeks, highlighting different areas requiring greater levels of transparency.
Data Privacy and Use
This might be the most important aspect to consider before using any AI software specific to mental health.
Users must know how their data is being collected, stored, and used, especially in sensitive mental health contexts. Clear policies on data sharing and anonymization are essential.
Look no further than social media to see how much data is being collected about you! Now imagine a similar process, BUT WITH YOUR MOST INTIMATE/PRIVATE/SECRET INFORMATION!
When you engage with an AI mental health app/website/service, make sure you confirm the security and encryption of the information (needs to be HIPAA compliant).
Recommendation: go to the privacy policy page of any AI mental health app/website and review the policy prior to offering ANY INFORMATION. If itโs an app, you can typically read this in the app store before downloading the app.
If there is no privacy policy, and it doesnโt fully explain the confidentiality component and provide proof of HIPAA compliant software to protect your information, DO NOT USE THAT SOFTWARE! I canโt stress this enough.
