After communicating with ELIZA, you’ll see how far AI tech has come, but it’s also quite amazing this was created around 60 years ago!!
The World Health Organization (WHO) recently released a report exploring AI’s applications and challenges in mental health research.

Guess when the first mental health AI chatbot was created?
1966!
ELIZA was an early natural language processing (NLP) program created in the mid-1960s by Joseph Weizenbaum at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Designed as a rudimentary AI system, ELIZA was one of the first programs capable of simulating conversation with a human user.
ELIZA's most famous implementation was the "DOCTOR" script, which mimicked the conversational style of a Rogerian psychotherapist. This version worked by using simple pattern-matching techniques to respond to user input, often reflecting questions or statements back to the user in a way that encouraged them to elaborate, such as:
User: "I feel sad."
ELIZA: "Why do you feel sad?"
Despite its simplicity, ELIZA made a significant cultural impact, as users often felt that they were engaging with a truly empathetic system. Weizenbaum, however, was surprised and concerned by how quickly people attributed human-like qualities to ELIZA, sparking debates about the ethical implications of using AI in therapeutic contexts.
Legacy and Impact
ELIZA was not designed to provide actual mental health support, but it paved the way for modern AI mental health tools like Woebot and Wysa. ELIZA demonstrated the potential—and limitations—of AI in fostering human connection and set the stage for ongoing advancements in mental health technology.
