A Call for Transparency in Mental Health AI Software
This will be an ongoing series over the next few weeks, highlighting different areas requiring greater levels of transparency.
Ethical Frameworks
As a licensed clinician, everything I do is guided by an ethical/legal framework through my licensing board, as well as mental health organizations. There are specific policies and the consumer/client has recourse should a licensed therapist engage in inappropriate behavior.
BUT, that’s not the case for mental health software offering AI-based “therapy” or mental health support. Since there is no licensed clinician providing the service, there is no licensing board monitoring their behavior. And, the consumer has no one to report a violation or concern.
Recommendation: clear ethical guidelines and governance should be in place to guide how these tools operate. Users need to know whether AI decisions adhere to recognized psychological and clinical standards.
Currently, none of this is happening. In the meantime:
Before using any type of AI supported mental health software, confirm the ethical guidelines the company is bound to, and who to report any concerns. If the answer is “none”, might want to reconsider your choice to utilize this service…
